Redesigning membrane solutions for cleaner water and a sustainable future

Discover Green-Mem

Green-Mem is developing a new generation of eco-designed, bio-based and recyclable membranes. The project will use renewable materials such as cellulose, chitosan and natural fibres to reduce reliance on fossil-based polymers and hazardous solvents. By combining green chemistry, green engineering and machine learning, Green-Mem will support the design, fabrication and optimisation of membranes with improved sustainability, performance and circularity. The aim is to create membrane solutions that are technically robust, scalable and suitable for applications including water treatment, antimicrobial filtration and other safe, selective separation processes.

The Solution

infographic of the project background

Membrane technologies are widely used in water treatment, filtration and separation processes, but many conventional polymer membranes are still made from fossil-based, non-biodegradable materials and fabricated using hazardous solvents. This creates a sustainability paradox: technologies designed to protect water and the environment can themselves contribute to pollution, resource use and end-of-life waste. Current membranes may also involve persistent materials, chemical-intensive production routes and limited circularity. Green-Mem starts from this challenge: how can membrane technologies be redesigned so that they support environmental protection without creating new environmental burdens?
